Everyone is currently wracking their brains trying to answer questions about the South Carolina Democratic primary race for Senate. How did an unknown guy like Alvin Greene, who didn’t raise a penny, had no campaign staff, no headquarters, no website, and, seemingly, no campaign to speak of, pull off an upset against a seasoned pro like his opponent Vic Rawl? Theories abound, including one, floated by Majority Whip James Clyburn, that Greene is a Republican plant. The problem is that Greene being a Republican plant does not explain how the man received nearly 60% of the vote; over 100,000 individuals voted for this guy.
The truth is much more simple than the conspiratorially inclined would have you believe, and it’s this: NOBODY GAVE A DAMN ABOUT THE CONTEST!
The voters knew that the Democratic nominee was a sacrificial lamb against the popular Jim DeMint and didn’t bother to research the candidates or their issues. No one knew who either candidate was. This is about the most extreme case of voter apathy I’ve ever seen, but that’s precisely what it is.
I’d like to see Greene’s position on the ballot (South Carolina uses a touch screen). How much do you want to bet he was in the first position?
To Alvin Greene, all I have to say is: Good for you man!
