First we were told that we needed to support Arlen Specter. When Pat Toomey announced that he would run against Specter in a primary, establishment Republicans were incensed. When Specter saw that he was fighting an uphill battle, he cynically switched parties. Republican stalwarts like Lindsey Graham shouted that Toomey hadn’t a chance in hell of winning in PA and publically declared his intention to draft Tom Ridge to run against Toomey. Where was Arlen’s loyalty?
Dede Scozzafava, the Republican candidate in NY 23 fiasco is another example. After a month of flagging poll numbers, Scozzafava, the candidate conservatives were told we must vote for out of party loyalty, stabbed the party in the back by dropping out of the race and endorsed Conservative Doug Hoffman’s liberal Democratic challenger. Where was Dede’s loyalty?
Today, we get word that Charlie Crist will be dropping his near pulseless bid for the Republican nomination and will instead run for the Florida Senate seat as an independent. The insider Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee endorsed Crist almost immediately after he announced his candidacy. Crist, after saying publically that he didn’t have any intention of running as a third-party candidate should he lose to his once long-shot rival Marco Rubio, has now done a 180, showing that he is more than willing to sell the Republican party down the river. Where is Charlie’s loyalty? (although in Charlie’s defense, we’ve known he’s been a snake for some time now)
So what’s the deal? Why are the favorites of Republican insiders turning out to be a den of vipers and turncoats? The answer is simple; the insiders and establishmentarians clearly put politics above character. The insiders value political connections over principles. When this is what you value, these are the caliber of people you get and they’ll be happy to spit in the face of those who showed them loyalty when it suits them.
The question is; why should we be loyal to this party if their own chosen candidates are completely disloyal?
